The programme

It couldn’t feel like homework.

Kids’ English is 10 Minute School’s three-year programme for children aged 5 to 10. It teaches English through stories, play and phonics, with social-emotional learning and 21st-century skills built into every level.

This book is where it begins: Level 01, Semester 01. A serious-looking textbook would have lost them on the first page, so I set out to make it feel like the first day with new friends, where the English simply happens along the way.

  • 3years
  • 3levels
  • 2semesters in each level
  • 36lessons in each semester

Meet the class

Four friends carry every lesson.

  • Hello! I am Boo.Boo the tiger wavingBoo
  • Hi! My name is Ellie.Ellie the elephantEllie

  • I’m Puffy.Puffy the chickPuffy

The layout idea

Read it like a comic.

The stories don’t sit in paragraphs. I cut the page into colour panels, so a child follows a scene moment by moment and reads each speech bubble without being asked to.

  • Diagonal cuts keep the page moving, so no two scenes feel the same.
  • One colour, one moment. Each panel is a single beat of the story.
  • One short line per bubble, so the English stays within reach.

The roadmap

Eighteen chapters, one road.

The layout guide

One chapter, one rhythm.

Every chapter walks the same way. Children stop asking what to do next, and the teacher always knows where the class is. Here is Chapter 2, laid flat.

Section A

The story, then the first activities

Section B

A second scene and more practice

The colour guide

Five soft grounds, one loud tag.

I replaced the white page with five soft colours that take turns from page to page. They are bright enough to feel like play and pale enough for black text to stay easy to read.

  • Sky#9DDBF0
  • Leaf#CAE2A6
  • Peach#FCD1A2

  1. Coral tagsThe one loud colour marks each activity, so a child always finds the next task.
  2. Word chipsThe words to use sit in a clean strip, right above the sentences.
  3. Wavy edgesColour blocks split a page into activities, and the hand-cut edge keeps it playful.
  4. White boxesWhite always means “this space is yours”. It’s where the pencil goes.

Inside the book

The last page

Because you are a champion.

The book doesn’t end on a test. Children grow a tree of their favourite things, play one last game about themselves and make a champion medal of their own.

Then the four friends ask one question: ready for the next one? Level 01 is only the start of the road.
